Sea turtle shells are fascinating structures, composed of over 50 bones that are fused together, forming a strong, protective covering. These shells have two parts: the carapace on the top and the plastron on the bottom. The intricate patterns and colors on the carapace are unique to each turtle, much like a fingerprint. Remarkably, a sea turtle cannot retract into its shell, unlike many other turtle species. This distinctive design not only provides protection but also plays a crucial role in the turtle's buoyancy and swimming efficiency.
