About The Shot
Moorea, French Polynesia/ 2023
"Waiting patiently at the surface, looking down into the depths of thousands of feet of water, I wait patiently for the blowhole spout of the humpback whales to shoot up from the horizon, signaling the whale’s approach. With the glare of the sun reflecting on Theo means surface I’m able to make out the faint mist of the water spout from the whales about 500ft away. With less than a few seconds to breath up, I take my final breath and free dive into the abyss, kicking as fast as I could, my heart beating through my chest, trying my best to predict where the whales will pass me. I see the faint silhouettes coming out of the blue charging straight towards me. Emerging from the blue expanse, two colossal humpback whales, each over 40 feet in length, glide toward me in tandem. The White-bellied whale sticks its pectoral fin out to gauge my distance from it, probably wondering with the odd speck with the shiny contraption is. The whale looks directly at confirming its awareness of me, the speck in the water. With a serene yet powerful motion, it continues its descent into the ocean's depths."
