I can never quite tell what Green turtles are thinking. Sometimes they look curious, sometimes grumpy, and other times it feels like they’re sizing you up for something entirely different. On this day, I was floating near the surface when this turtle came straight up from the bottom, rising out of the blue and locking eyes with me as it passed by. There’s something about the way they move—slow, steady, completely unbothered—that makes time feel like it slows down around them. Encounters like this always remind me how ancient these animals are, and how small we really are when we’re lucky enough to share space with them, even if just for a moment.
