About The Shot
French Polynesia/ 2025
The underwater clarity in French Polynesia is some of the most breathtaking I’ve ever seen. The crystal-clear waters allow for incredible visibility, sometimes exceeding 100ft, making every dive feel like floating in an endless blue cathedral. I captured this image from the edge of an atoll shooting into the drop-off that has a dramatic drop from about 40ft to a couple hundred feet. Since the animals around this particular island rarely see people, they were incredibly inquisitive about what I was. This clarity is a result of several factors—strong ocean currents flush out sediments, while the lack of large river systems means minimal runoff to cloud the water. Healthy coral reefs also play a crucial role, filtering the water and providing shelter for marine life that thrives in these pristine conditions. The abundance of sharks, vibrant fish, and thriving coral formations is a testament to the purity of these waters, where a balanced ecosystem ensures that both clarity and life flourish together.
