New Providence, Bahamas/ 2025
Caribbean reef sharks are the most common shark species here in The Bahamas. When most people picture what a shark looks like, it’s probably something very close to a Caribbean reef shark. One thing I’ve always found interesting about them is their color pattern. They’re dark along their backs and almost white on their bellies. That’s not random. It’s called countershading. From above, their darker back blends into the deep reef and blue below. From underneath, their lighter belly matches the bright surface light. It’s one of the most effective camouflage systems in the ocean—helping them stay hidden from both prey and anything that might see them as competition. Adaptations like this are part of what make sharks such perfectly built apex predators.
