About The Shot
New Providence, The Bahamas/ 2025
Caribbean reef sharks are perfectly built for their environment, and one of their most effective adaptations is something called countershading. If you look closely, their backs are dark while their bellies are almost white. From above, that darker top blends into the deep blue and shadowed reef below. From underneath, their lighter belly matches the bright surface light shining down. In this image, the silhouette shows exactly how it works. With the sun behind the shark, its pale underside disappears into the light while the darker dorsal side fades into the blue. It’s simple, but incredibly effective, one of the many reasons Caribbean reef sharks remain such efficient apex predators in Bahamian waters.
