Gossip

When diving in a Nassau grouper spawning aggregation, I’m always searching for smaller scenes within the much bigger story. I photographed this during a January 2025 research expedition in the Ragged Islands, where our team encountered thousands of Nassau grouper at what the Perry Institute described as the largest spawning aggregation surveyed in The Bahamas to date. These critically endangered fish travel to specific locations during spawning season to reproduce, helping replenish grouper populations throughout our waters. I think of these gatherings like a massive family reunion, with relatives coming together after not seeing each other for a long time. Conversations are happening everywhere, everyone is catching up, and every corner of the room seems to have its own story. The groupers in this photograph reminded me of the aunts standing off to the side, sharing the latest family gossip. Their eyes and expressions almost make them look like they’re trying to keep the conversation private, even while surrounded by thousands of relatives. That small, familiar moment within such a rare natural event inspired the title, “Gossip.”
