Dolphins are such charismatic animals. They always look like they’re about to open their mouths and say something to us—in a language we’d understand. On this particular day, I was out freediving with some friends, and while we were in transit to the next dive spot, I noticed a fin surfing in the boat’s wake. I knew right away it was a dolphin, and soon we saw more of them—a small pod of craters feeding nearby. That day, I had my camera set up for macro photography, so I took on the challenge of trying to shoot these fast-moving, unpredictable animals with a macro lens, which, any photographer knows, is no easy task. Getting the focus right and keeping them in frame, especially while freediving, takes patience. During a few dives, the dolphins swam close and locked eyes with me, circling me out of pure curiosity. They seemed just as intrigued by me as I was by them, but completely unbothered, as if we were just another part of their ocean world, or maybe they felt sorry for us that we couldn’t keep up with them. The answer only the dolphin would know.
