Nurse sharks are easily the most popular shark species in Exuma, Bahamas. If you’ve ever visited the cays, chances are you’ve seen them at places like Staniel Cay, Compass Cay, or Highborne Cay. Over the years, these sharks have learned to associate the marinas with fishermen cleaning their catch, which naturally draws them in. What started as sharks looking for scraps eventually became one of the biggest attractions in the Exuma Cays. Today, visitors from all over the world get the chance to swim alongside them in shallow, clear water. Nurse sharks are generally less aggressive than many other shark species found in The Bahamas, and they’ve become very accustomed to people. For many travelers, this is their first real encounter with a shark — and often the moment they realize these animals aren’t what Hollywood made them out to be.
