About The Shot
Rocky Dundas, Exuma, Bahamas/ 2023
Rocky Dundas is one of the most well-known cave systems in Exuma, and one of the easiest to explore if you’re spending the day boating through the Exuma Cays. What makes it so unique is how shallow it is inside. Depending on the tide, you can actually walk into the cave without even getting your head wet. Inside, towering columns formed by stalactites and stalagmites rise from the cave floor — shaped over thousands of years. The limestone has developed beautiful natural color patterns from years of mineral deposits, giving the walls a texture and tone that feel almost painted. But the real magic happens when the light lines up. There’s a natural opening in the ceiling, and when the sun is positioned just right, a single beam pours down into the cave. It looks almost unreal — like a UFO spotlight shining from above. Every time I enter this cave and see that beam cutting through the darkness, it reminds me how much wonder can exist in the simplest natural spaces.
