About The Shot
New Providence, Bahamas/ 2024
"There was no human interference in capturing this photograph. This Red Cushion Sea Star, commonly referred to as a starfish, was being eaten alive. These starfish are among the most popular sea stars found in the Bahamas, but I always wondered what eats starfish. These slow-moving creatures graze across sand and grass flats in search of food but are also prey for other animals. Pictured here is the underside of a starfish being devoured by one of its predators, the Giant Triton Conch. While swimming near a seagrass bed known for turtles and starfish, I came across a Giant Triton Conch eating a starfish. The conch flipped the starfish to its side and began eating it from the inside, sucking out all of its insides. This predation revealed the underside of one of the starfish's legs, showing its small suckers used as feet to help it walk across the bottom. I named this photo "Soles" to reflect the soles of the starfish's feet and as a play on words, highlighting the starfish's soul being consumed."
