"I had the incredible opportunity to spend about an hour in the water with a pod of eight Bottlenose dolphins in Bimini on New Year's Day 2024. These dolphins gracefully swam around us, occasionally surfacing for air while engaging in crater feeding—a method where they use echolocation to stir up fish hidden in the sand below. Intrigued, I freedived down to their level and followed one particular dolphin, distinguished by distinctive eye stripes, which seemed to be a leader in the pod. As I approached, the dolphin elegantly circled me, making eye contact before we both surfaced together for a breath of air. It was a mesmerizing encounter with these intelligent marine creatures."
