About The Shot
New Providence, Bahamas/ 2022
This photograph was meticulously crafted to offer a glimpse into the rich history of black individuals, encapsulating a profound narrative in a single, striking image. Every element within the composition, from the presence of a black freediver to the interplay of dramatic natural light and the choice of a neutral-colored wardrobe, was thoughtfully selected to create a visually simple yet profoundly impactful image. The collaborative effort between a black freediving underwater photographer and a black freediver was driven by the intention to ignite inspiration within future generations of people of color in the realm of ocean exploration. It serves as a tribute to the pioneers who paved the way before us, an inspiration to those who stand beside us, and a narrative that will be cherished by generations yet to come. The subject of this photograph is the statue known as "Virtuoso Man," an artistic creation by Willicey Tynes, located within the BREEF Sir Nicholas Nuttall Coral Reef Sculpture Garden in Nassau, Bahamas. The figure gazes forward, symbolizing hope for the future, for us, for all of humanity. It carries a message urging us to heed the wisdom of the past, to preserve and pass down the stories of those who came before, and to contribute our own unique chapters to this ongoing narrative.
