About The Shot
New Providence, Bahamas/ 2018
Although this location wasn't our initial choice, circumstances involving unfavorable weather and time constraints left us with no alternative but to go late afternoon. Earlier in the day, the freediver and I had wrapped up shooting two other shipwreck photo concepts ahead of schedule. With a significant amount of daylight remaining, we decided to explore a familiar spot I frequented during my childhood spearfishing days—a location known for its caves and swim-throughs. To our surprise, upon our arrival, we were greeted by a little treat from nature: a massive school of Silverside Fish had taken residence in most of the caves. The task of orchestrating the synchronized movement of thousands of tiny fish initially seemed daunting. However, I held the feeling that once we started shooting, the elements would align as we needed them to. It's challenging to convey the profound sense of tranquility that enveloped us as we observed these small fish gracefully swimming in perfect unison all around us beneath the water's surface. I wanted to create this image as a reminder to viewers to take a deep breath & relax. Meditation can happen in different forms. Some people meditate in a quiet place with their legs crossed, while others meditate during walks in nature. I practice meditation daily to help calm my mind, regulate my thoughts, and help practice focus on what’s important. Freediving is a very meditative sport since you have to focus on being completely present to perform at your best. If you ever feel like your thoughts are too loud, give meditation and or freediving a try.
