About The Shot
Long Island, The Bahamas/ 2023
The shallow, sandy rim of Dean’s Blue Hole presents a unique opportunity to shoot at a horizontal angle, but with a seemingly vertical sand wall. I always think of this wall as a blank artist's canvas—anything placed in front of it, especially a human form, stands out in bold contrast against the white background. Whenever I dive here, I try to come up with new concepts that show off both the environment and the body’s natural ability to move underwater. In this photograph, the freediver is also a contortionist, which gave us the perfect chance to highlight the elegance and control of the human form underwater. The way her body folds and flows—paired with the absence of gravity—feels like watching a live sketch come to life. The setting at the edge of the Blue Hole, where the rippled sand drops off into the deep, dark blue, adds a sense of mystery and space that’s hard to replicate anywhere else. It’s that harmony between the ocean’s natural beauty and the grace of movement that makes this place and this shot so special.
