Wet Rose

In light of recent revelations regarding the critical role of seagrass in carbon offset, I was inspired to create a photograph as a tribute to these often under-appreciated seagrass meadows, which are indispensable for the well-being of our planet. These lush underwater meadows play a pivotal role in marine ecosystem development and the promotion of healthy air quality, benefiting not only marine life but also contributing to our oxygen supply. Moreover, they serve as primary habitats for a myriad of marine species, functioning as both feeding grounds and nurseries, nurturing countless juvenile marine organisms. My canvas for this conceptual photograph was a vibrant, emerald-green seagrass bed situated in 12ft/ 4m of water. The success of this concept hinged on several natural and logistical factors aligning perfectly. It was imperative that the model and I conducted the photoshoot during the morning hours, allowing the light rays to cut diagonally through the water, creating the desired effect. Additionally, we needed high tide conditions in the morning to maximize underwater visibility. Shooting later in the day would have resulted in unwanted shadows on the subject while missing the optimal tide window would have compromised the clarity of the underwater environment. The choice of red for the subject's attire was deliberate, as it complemented the lush green seagrass backdrop. Furthermore, our shallow shooting location ensured that the color red remained vivid in the photograph, as minimal color loss occurred due to the varying degrees of light wavelength absorption by water as objects descend deeper underwater.
