About The Shot
Marutea Sud, French Polynesia/ 2023
"One of the most striking things that stood out to me while diving in French Polynesia was the incredible variety of colors and patterns displayed by the clams. Each one had a unique, vibrant design that was only visible when its lips were open as it breathed, filtering water to extract oxygen. Clams have specialized light-sensitive eyes, called “eyespots”, along the edge of their mantles, allowing them to detect changes in light and movement—helping them sense potential predators. As I approached, the clam detected my presence and began to close, requiring patience to capture the perfect moment. By remaining still with my finger on the camera shutter, I waited for the clam to slowly reopen, revealing its mesmerizing inner beauty. These colorful lips not only make them visually stunning but also serve a crucial purpose, housing symbiotic algae that help provide the clam with essential nutrients."
